Couples and divers who want a villa over the lagoon, a good house reef and very little to organise.
Local time
The Maldives is a chain of coral atolls strung north to south across the equator, southwest of India, and almost every resort occupies an island of its own. That single fact shapes the stay: you arrive by boat or seaplane, go barefoot from the first evening and spend most of your time between villa, lagoon and reef. The water is the attraction, warm all year and often clear enough to watch young reef sharks and rays from the deck.
The atolls differ more than the pictures suggest. North and South Malé Atoll lie close to the airport and are reached by speedboat, while Baa, Raa, Lhaviyani and Ari need a seaplane or a domestic flight, and the deep south around Huvadhu and Addu sits almost on the equator. Choose by house reef, transfer time and villa position first, and by décor last.
When to go
The dry northeast monsoon, from December to April, brings the calmest seas, the most sunshine and often the clearest water, and it is also when rates and occupancy peak. May, October and November are good months between the monsoons. From June to September the southwest monsoon brings wind, swell and heavy showers that usually pass within hours. Divers still come, because this is when manta rays gather in large numbers in Baa Atoll.
Typical long term values, indicative. Weather in any single year can differ.
Where to stay
Almost every resort is the only one on its island, so the choice comes down to atoll, island size and villa type. Overwater villas line jetties over the lagoon, beach villas sit behind the tree line with their own patch of sand, and the larger islands add pool villas, several restaurants and a dive centre. Smaller islands feel more private but offer less variety at dinner. Ask whether the house reef can be reached from the beach, and how far the drop-off lies from your villa.
Nonstop flights from a handful of European cities take around ten hours to Malé, and many routings connect through the Gulf. From the airport island the last leg takes 20 minutes to an hour and a half: a speedboat to the nearer resorts, a seaplane or a domestic flight and boat to the outer atolls.
