Bali

Couples and wellness seekers who want pool villas, yoga, rice terraces and temple culture.

Local time

Bali is a volcanic island where the resort is only half the point. Inland, rice terraces step down river valleys towards the sea, small offerings of flowers and incense appear on doorsteps every morning, and temple gongs carry across the fields at festival time. On the coast you find surf breaks, clifftop villas on the Bukit Peninsula and calmer, reef-protected water in the south and east.

Wellness comes naturally here. Yoga pavilions above jungle gorges, Balinese massage and plant-based kitchens are part of everyday life rather than a resort extra, especially around Ubud. The island also suits couples and adults travelling without children, with a wide choice of private pool villas, many of them set in walled gardens of frangipani and stone.

When to go

The year in Bali

The dry season from May to September is the best time, with sunny days and lower humidity; July and August are also the busiest weeks. April and October are good shoulder months. From November to March the wet season brings short, heavy downpours, usually in the afternoon or at night, and the countryside at its greenest. Rates fall, but storms can wash debris onto the west coast beaches.

Where to stay

Resort styles here

Ubud and the valleys around it are the place for jungle villas, rice terrace views and wellness programmes, an hour or more inland from the airport. In the south, Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula have clifftop villas above surf beaches, Jimbaran faces the sunset across a sandy bay, and Nusa Dua and Sanur offer calm water and larger beach resorts. The quieter east, around Sidemen, Candidasa and Amed, and the far northwest near West Bali National Park suit those who want space and diving.

Getting there

From Europe, Bali is usually reached with one change in the Gulf or Asia, around 16 hours in total, to Denpasar airport on the isthmus south of Kuta. The drive to Jimbaran or Nusa Dua takes about half an hour and to Ubud an hour to an hour and a half, depending heavily on traffic.
